Chapter 3 — The Secret Behind Her Calm Smile
Part 1 The Woman Who Never Lost Control
Alexander Sterling had spent most of his life learning one thing.
People always revealed themselves when they were under pressure.
Some became angry.
Some became desperate.
Some showed their true intentions when they thought nobody was watching.
That was why Alexander trusted observation more than words.
And lately, the person he observed the most was his own wife.
Claire Bennett.
The woman who was supposed to be simple.
The woman who was supposed to have no connection to his world.
The woman who had somehow managed to make his entire family uncomfortable within a few days.
Alexander sat in his office, staring at the information on his computer screen.
Claire Bennett.
Age: 31.
Occupation: Flower shop owner.
Family background: Limited information.
Previous records: Incomplete.
The report should have been ordinary.
But it wasn't.
There were gaps.
Too many gaps.
Five years ago, Claire Bennett appeared in the city with a completely new life.
No clear history.
No old friends.
No previous records.
It was almost as if someone had erased everything before that point.
Alexander frowned.
People could hide things.
But they couldn't erase an entire part of their life without leaving traces.
Unless they knew exactly what they were doing.
His assistant, Daniel, stood across from the desk.
"Are you sure you want me to continue investigating?"
Alexander looked up.
"Why wouldn't I?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because she is your wife."
The room became quiet.
Alexander leaned back.
"That doesn't change anything."
But even as he said it, he knew something was different.
Before Claire entered his life, every decision was simple.
Everything had a purpose.
Everything had an outcome.
But Claire was unpredictable.
And Alexander Sterling hated unpredictable things.
Especially when they were standing right beside him.
Meanwhile, Claire was watering flowers in her small shop.
The place was quiet.
Warm sunlight came through the windows.
Customers often told her the shop felt peaceful.
They didn't know that peace was something she had carefully created.
Because before this place...
Her life had been anything but peaceful.
Claire touched an old photograph hidden inside a drawer.
A picture of a younger version of herself.
A different name.
A different life.
A life she had buried.
She remembered the day everything changed.
The accusations.
The betrayal.
The people who turned against her family.
And the promise she made to herself.
Never trust appearances.
Never underestimate people.
Never forget.
Her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Claire answered.
"Hello?"
A familiar voice came from the other side.
"You're really living as a flower shop owner now?"
Claire's expression changed slightly.
Only for a second.
Then her calm smile returned.
"Who is this?"
The person laughed softly.
"You really changed your voice, your name, everything."
A pause.
"But I would recognize you anywhere, Ava."
Claire's fingers tightened around the phone.
Nobody had called her that name for years.
"Don't use that name."
"Why?"
The voice became colder.
"Are you afraid Alexander Sterling will discover who you really are?"
Claire looked toward the window.
For the first time that day, her smile disappeared.
"Stay away from him."
The person laughed.
"So you do care about him."
Claire ended the call.
But the words remained.
Because the one thing she had tried to avoid...
Had already started happening.
Part 2 The Test Nobody Expected
That afternoon, Claire received an invitation.
A private gathering at the Sterling family estate.
She already knew what it meant.
A test.
The Sterling family didn't invite people.
They evaluated them.
When Claire arrived, she immediately noticed something unusual.
The atmosphere was different.
Several family members were gathered in the main hall.
And on the table were several documents.
Eleanor Sterling looked at her.
"Claire."
"Mrs. Sterling."
"We need your opinion."
Claire looked surprised.
"My opinion?"
Eleanor smiled.
"Yes."
It sounded polite.
But Claire knew better.
This wasn't a request.
It was a challenge.
One of the family members handed her the documents.
"We have been discussing a problem with one of our important partnerships."
Claire looked through the information.
She remained silent.
Too silent.
Everyone watched her.
Waiting.
They wanted to see her fail.
Because if she admitted she didn't understand, they would prove their point.
She was only Alexander's wife.
Nothing more.
But Claire noticed something.
The problem wasn't in the documents.
It was in the people who prepared them.
She placed the papers down.
"I think everyone is focusing on the wrong thing."
A few people exchanged looks.
One man smiled.
"And what exactly do you think we missed?"
Claire looked at him.
"The information."
Everyone became quiet.
She continued.
"The numbers look fine. The plan looks reasonable."
"Then what's wrong?"
"The assumption behind it."
The man frowned.
Claire pointed at one section.
"You believe the other side will make a decision based on what benefits them."
"Isn't that obvious?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"People don't always choose what benefits them."
She looked around the room.
"Sometimes they choose what makes them feel safe."
The room fell silent.
Because that was something nobody had considered.
Claire continued.
"If you want cooperation, stop trying to prove you are stronger."
She closed the document.
"Make them believe working with you is their choice."
Nobody spoke.
Even Eleanor looked thoughtful.
Alexander, who had just entered the room, heard the last sentence.
He stopped at the doorway.
Again.
That feeling.
The feeling that he was seeing only a small part of Claire.
After everyone left, Alexander found her outside.
"You knew they were testing you."
Claire looked at him.
"Yes."
"And you still answered."
"Because they asked a question."
Alexander stared at her.
"You aren't afraid of them."
Claire smiled.
"Should I be?"
Most people would have answered differently.
But Claire wasn't trying to impress him.
She genuinely didn't understand why she should be afraid.
Alexander stepped closer.
"You realize my family is not easy to deal with."
"Neither are most people."
A slight smile appeared on his face.
Almost invisible.
But Claire noticed.
"You almost smiled."
"I did not."
"You did."
"I didn't."
For a moment, the cold CEO disappeared.
And Claire saw something else.
A normal person.
Someone who was tired of always being strong.
Then the moment passed.
Alexander looked away.
"You're strange."
Claire smiled.
"I've heard that before."
Part 3 The Name Hidden In The Past
That night, Alexander received another report.
This time, it was not about Claire Bennett.
It was about another name.
Ava Bennett.
The report contained old information.
Not much.
But enough.
Ava Bennett had once been known as someone who could solve impossible situations.
People described her as:
calm under pressure extremely observant impossible to manipulate
Then five years ago...
She disappeared.
Alexander stared at the screen.
The description felt familiar.
Too familiar.
His phone rang.
It was Daniel.
"Mr. Sterling."
"What did you find?"
A pause.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"Five years ago, before Ava Bennett disappeared, she was connected to an incident involving several major families."
Alexander's expression changed.
"What incident?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"We are still investigating."
Alexander looked toward the window.
The city was quiet.
But his mind wasn't.
Five years ago.
Ava Bennett.
A mysterious disappearance.
And now...
Claire Bennett.
His wife.
The woman who appeared ordinary.
But wasn't.
At that moment, Alexander realized something.
The contract marriage he created to simplify his life...
Had brought the biggest mystery directly into his home.
Claire stood alone in her apartment that night.
She opened a hidden box.
Inside were old documents.
Old photographs.
And a small card.
A name written on it.
Ava Bennett.
She stared at it for a long time.
Then she whispered:
"It's time."
Because she knew something.
Alexander Sterling was already searching for the truth.
And soon...
He would discover the woman he married was never the woman everyone thought she was.
