Chapter 2 — The Wife Everyone Looked Down On

Part 1 The New Mrs. Sterling

Claire Bennett had expected the Sterling family mansion to be impressive.

She was not disappointed.

The estate stood on a quiet hill outside the city, surrounded by tall trees and perfectly maintained gardens. Everything about the place looked carefully designed, from the stone pathways to the enormous glass windows reflecting the morning sunlight.

It was beautiful.

But Claire knew something.

The more perfect a place looked from the outside, the more secrets it usually hid inside.

The moment she stepped through the front door, she felt it.

The silence.

The servants stopped what they were doing.

The family members who were sitting in the living room looked up.

No one greeted her.

No one smiled.

They were judging her.

Not because they knew her.

Because they had already decided who she was.

The woman who married Alexander Sterling.

The woman who didn't belong.

"Welcome to the Sterling family."

A cold voice came from the stairs.

Alexander's mother, Eleanor Sterling, walked down slowly.

She was elegant, composed, and intimidating.

The kind of woman who didn't need to raise her voice because everyone already listened.

Claire smiled politely.

"It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Sterling."

Eleanor looked at her for several seconds.

Then her eyes moved down to Claire's dress.

Simple.

Tasteful.

But not covered in expensive labels.

"I heard you own a flower shop."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"How charming."

The way Eleanor said the word made it clear.

She didn't mean it as a compliment.

"A flower shop is a peaceful business."

Claire smiled.

"It is."

Eleanor sat down.

"But the Sterling family is different."

Everyone understood what she meant.

A flower shop was small.

The Sterling family was not.

"You should understand something, Claire."

Eleanor folded her hands.

"Being Alexander's wife means representing this family."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

Eleanor looked at her.

"Because many women have tried to stand beside Alexander."

A pause.

"They all thought they were prepared."

Claire remained silent.

"And they all discovered this family is not as simple as it appears."

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"I believe every family has complicated parts."

That answer surprised Eleanor.

Most women would have immediately tried to prove themselves.

Claire didn't.

She simply stated a fact.

Eleanor narrowed her eyes.

"You're very calm."

"I have learned that panic rarely solves anything."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor smiled slightly.

Not warmly.

More like she had discovered something interesting.

"Let's see how long that confidence lasts."

Alexander watched the conversation from the hallway.

He had originally expected Claire to feel uncomfortable.

Most people did.

The Sterling family had a way of making outsiders feel small.

But Claire stood there like she belonged.

That bothered him.

Because he knew she shouldn't.

At least, according to everything he knew about her.

She was supposed to be ordinary.

A woman with a simple life.

A woman who accepted a contract marriage because it was beneficial.

But ordinary people didn't speak to his mother like that.

Ordinary people didn't stay calm under pressure.

Alexander found himself asking the same question again.

Who was Claire Bennett?

Part 2 The Test At The Family Dinner

That evening, the Sterling family held a formal dinner.

It was Claire's first official appearance as Alexander's wife.

The table was filled with important family members.

Everyone was polite.

But Claire could feel the hidden questions.

Where did she come from?

Why did Alexander choose her?

What did she want?

A young woman sitting across from Claire smiled.

She was one of Alexander's cousins, Amelia.

"I have to admit, Claire."

Everyone looked toward her.

"I'm curious."

"About what?"

"How did you and Alexander meet?"

Claire placed her fork down.

"We met through an introduction."

Amelia smiled.

"An introduction?"

"Yes."

"That sounds very unexpected."

"It was."

A few people laughed quietly.

Everyone knew what she was implying.

A woman like Claire didn't usually meet someone like Alexander.

Then Victoria entered the conversation.

"I think everyone is just surprised."

Her voice was gentle.

"Alexander has always been very selective."

Claire looked at her.

"Is that so?"

Victoria nodded.

"He has always valued intelligence, experience, and background."

A small pause.

"Especially background."

The message was obvious.

Claire had none of those things.

Alexander noticed.

His expression became colder.

"Victoria."

She smiled.

"I'm only saying what everyone is thinking."

The room became quiet.

Claire looked around the table.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting to see if she would become angry.

Defensive.

Embarrassed.

Instead, she picked up her glass.

"I understand."

Victoria seemed satisfied.

Until Claire continued.

"People usually judge what they can see."

The smile disappeared slightly.

"But sometimes the most important things are the ones people don't notice."

Nobody answered.

Because Claire's words sounded simple.

But they carried weight.

Alexander looked at her carefully.

Again.

That strange feeling appeared.

The feeling that she was always saying more than she revealed.

Later that night, Alexander found Claire in the library.

She was looking at an old collection of family books.

"You handled dinner well."

Claire looked up.

"Was that a compliment?"

"Don't get used to it."

She smiled.

"Don't worry. I won't."

Alexander walked closer.

"You knew what Victoria was doing."

"Yes."

"And you didn't react."

"No."

"Why?"

Claire closed the book.

"Because reacting was what she wanted."

Alexander studied her.

"You understand people."

Claire looked at him.

"Everyone understands people."

"No."

His voice became serious.

"Not like you."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

There was something different between them now.

A small shift.

A little less distance.

But then Alexander remembered.

The contract.

The reason they were together.

He stepped back.

"Don't misunderstand."

Claire smiled.

"I won't."

But both of them knew something had changed.

Part 3 The Woman Who Solved What Nobody Could

The next morning, Alexander received an urgent call.

A problem had appeared inside one of Sterling Group's major departments.

Several important clients were unhappy.

The team had spent days trying to understand the issue.

Nobody had an answer.

Alexander arrived at the office early.

The meeting room was filled with tension.

Managers argued.

Everyone blamed someone else.

"The communication team failed."

"No, the product team ignored feedback."

"We need more time."

Alexander listened silently.

Then he noticed someone standing outside the room.

Claire.

She wasn't supposed to be there.

"What are you doing here?"

She looked at him.

"I came to bring you lunch."

Alexander looked at the food in her hand.

A simple excuse.

He didn't believe it.

Before he could say anything, Claire glanced toward the meeting room.

"Your team is looking at the wrong problem."

Everyone turned.

A manager frowned.

"And you know that because?"

Claire hesitated.

She knew she shouldn't interfere.

This wasn't part of their agreement.

But she saw the mistake.

A mistake that could hurt innocent people.

"The complaints are not because people dislike your product."

Silence.

"Then what is it?"

Claire walked toward the screen.

She pointed at the information displayed.

"The problem is expectation."

Everyone looked confused.

"The customers thought they were receiving one thing, but they received something else."

She paused.

"Your team is trying to fix the product."

She looked at Alexander.

"But the real issue is that nobody understood what people actually needed."

The room became quiet.

One manager checked the information again.

Slowly, his expression changed.

"She's right."

Everyone looked surprised.

The manager continued:

"The feedback patterns are completely different from what we assumed."

Alexander stared at Claire.

Not because she solved the problem.

But because she solved it in minutes.

Something his entire team couldn't figure out for days.

After the meeting ended, Alexander followed her into the hallway.

"Who are you?"

Claire stopped.

The question was quiet.

But serious.

"What do you mean?"

"You walk into a room full of experts and find the answer immediately."

Claire smiled.

"Maybe I just pay attention."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"You're hiding something."

For the first time, Claire's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Alexander saw it.

A flash of something.

Pain.

Memory.

A past she didn't want anyone to know.

Then it disappeared.

Claire looked at him.

"Everyone has secrets, Alexander."

She walked away.

Leaving him with one thought.

The woman he married to make his life easier...

Was becoming the biggest mystery in his life.

That night, Alexander opened the investigation report about Claire Bennett again.

This time, he didn't look at it as a husband checking a contract.

He looked at it as someone searching for the truth.

And at the bottom of the report, he found something impossible.

A missing record.

A deleted name.

A photo from five years ago.

A woman standing beside a group of people.

The woman in the photo looked exactly like Claire.

But the name underneath was different.

Ava Bennett.

Alexander stared at the screen.

For the first time since their contract began...

He realized one thing.

He might not be the person controlling this marriage.

Maybe...

He was the one being chosen.
