Chapter 3 — The Marriage Nobody Expected
PART 1
The morning after the announcement.
The world woke up with one question.
Who was Emily Carter?
For ten years, her name had belonged to the past.
A forgotten child.
A tragic victim.
The daughter of a scientist who died in a mysterious explosion.
But overnight…
Everything changed.
Emily Carter was no longer a girl who disappeared.
She was the woman who had married Nathaniel Reed.
The CEO of Reed Global Holdings.
The man who had rejected countless marriage proposals from wealthy families around the world.
The man who had always claimed:
Business was more important than personal relationships.
The media could not understand it.
Neither could the public.
Inside the Reed Global headquarters.
The entire top floor was filled with reporters.
Cameras.
Microphones.
Questions.
“Mr. Reed, when did you and Miss Carter begin your relationship?”
“Is this a strategic marriage between two powerful families?”
“Did you know Emily Carter was alive before the announcement?”
“Is Astra Foundation connected to Reed Global?”
Nathaniel stood in front of the cameras.
Calm.
Expressionless.
The same man who had negotiated billion-dollar deals without changing his expression.
But today…
The world was looking for a weakness.
A mistake.
A reaction.
Nathaniel looked at the crowd.
Then spoke.
“Emily Carter and I made a personal decision.”
The reporters immediately became louder.
“Personal?”
“Are you saying this is not a business arrangement?”
Nathaniel paused.
A small silence appeared.
Then:
“Yes.”
“It is personal.”
The answer shocked everyone.
Because Nathaniel Reed was not a man who explained himself.
Especially not about relationships.
The reporters continued asking questions.
But Nathaniel walked away.
No more answers.
No more explanations.
At the same time.
Emily watched the interview from inside a private vehicle.
She looked at Nathaniel's expression on the screen.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost perfect.
But she noticed something.
When he said:
“It is personal.”
His fingers moved slightly.
A tiny movement.
Most people would never notice.
Emily did.
Because she had spent ten years studying people.
Fear.
Lies.
Pressure.
They all showed somewhere.
And Nathaniel Reed…
Was hiding something.
Her phone rang.
Adrian Sterling.
Emily answered.
“You saw the interview?”
“Yes.”
“What do you think?”
A pause.
Then Adrian said:
“He is protecting you.”
Emily looked outside the window.
“That's what everyone keeps saying.”
“And you don't believe it.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Emily was silent for a moment.
Then:
“Because people who protect others usually don't hide the truth from them.”
Adrian did not argue.
Because he knew she was talking about him too.
The car stopped.
Emily looked outside.
For the first time, she saw the Reed family estate.
It was not a typical billionaire mansion.
It was colder.
More private.
More like a fortress.
Located outside Westbridge.
Surrounded by forests and security systems.
The building itself was modern.
Glass.
Steel.
Stone.
Everything designed for control.
Emily stepped out.
A woman in her fifties approached.
“Miss Carter.”
“I am Clara.”
“The head housekeeper.”
Emily nodded.
“Nice to meet you.”
Clara smiled.
“Everyone has been waiting for you.”
Emily looked at the house.
“Everyone?”
Before Clara answered.
A voice came from behind.
“Welcome to the Reed family.”
Emily turned.
An older man stood there.
Nathaniel's grandfather.
Alexander Reed.
Former chairman of Reed Global Holdings.
The man who built the foundation of the Reed empire.
Emily knew his reputation.
Brilliant.
Ruthless.
Unforgiving.
Alexander studied her carefully.
“So this is Evelyn Carter's daughter.”
Emily remained calm.
“Yes.”
A faint smile appeared on Alexander's face.
“You have her eyes.”
Emily's expression changed slightly.
Most people who mentioned her mother talked about her achievements.
Her intelligence.
Her discoveries.
But Alexander noticed something personal.
“You knew her.”
It was not a question.
Alexander looked away.
“Many people knew Evelyn Carter.”
“That is not an answer.”
The old man's eyes returned to her.
“You are exactly like her.”
Emily did not respond.
Because she had heard that too many times.
But every time someone said it…
She wondered:
Was being like her mother a blessing?
Or a curse?
That evening.
Emily officially moved into the Reed residence.
Her room was on the second floor.
Separate from Nathaniel's.
Exactly according to the contract.
No emotional relationship.
No interference.
No unnecessary contact.
Everything was arranged perfectly.
Too perfectly.
Emily looked around.
A room prepared for her.
Clothes already arranged.
Books placed on shelves.
Even some of her childhood belongings recovered from storage.
She immediately noticed something.
A small wooden box.
She opened it.
Inside was an old bracelet.
Her mother's bracelet.
Emily froze.
She had lost it the night of the explosion.
She picked it up slowly.
A memory appeared.
Fire.
Smoke.
Her mother's voice.
“Emily, run!”
Her fingers tightened.
Someone had kept this for ten years.
Someone knew she survived.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
Nathaniel entered.
Emily immediately turned.
“You had this.”
Nathaniel looked at the bracelet.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Because your mother asked me to keep it.”
Emily's expression changed.
“When?”
“Before the explosion.”
The room became quiet.
Emily stepped closer.
“My mother knew something would happen.”
“Yes.”
“And she trusted you.”
Nathaniel looked at the bracelet.
“She trusted me with something important.”
“What?”
Nathaniel looked at her.
But this time…
He did not answer.
Emily's eyes became colder.
“There it is again.”
“What?”
“The silence.”
Nathaniel remained still.
“You always stop when you reach the truth.”
His voice lowered.
“Because some truths destroy people.”
Emily laughed softly.
“Do you really think I am still the twelve-year-old girl you saved?”
“No.”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“That is exactly why I am worried.”
For the first time…
Emily saw something different in his eyes.
Not calculation.
Not control.
Concern.
Real concern.
And that made her more uncomfortable than any lie.
PART 2
The next morning.
The first family meeting after the marriage.
The Reed family board gathered.
Executives.
Shareholders.
Senior members.
Everyone wanted to see Emily Carter.
Not because they welcomed her.
Because they wanted to understand her value.
The meeting room was silent when Emily entered.
Several people looked surprised.
They expected someone fragile.
Someone overwhelmed.
Instead…
They saw a woman who walked into the room like she belonged there.
Nathaniel sat beside her.
A clear message.
She had his support.
One board member spoke.
“Miss Carter.”
Emily looked at him.
“Congratulations on your marriage.”
A polite smile.
“But I believe everyone here has the same question.”
“What question?”
The man leaned back.
“Why?”
The room became quiet.
“Why would Nathaniel Reed marry someone who disappeared for ten years?”
Emily looked around.
Nobody moved.
Everyone was waiting.
She could have answered emotionally.
She could have defended herself.
Instead, she asked:
“Do you believe Nathaniel Reed makes decisions without reason?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Emily continued.
“Then perhaps the question should not be why he married me.”
“But why everyone is afraid that he did.”
The room changed.
Several expressions became uncomfortable.
Nathaniel looked at her.
A small reaction.
Almost invisible.
But Emily noticed.
Approval.
For the first time.
After the meeting.
Nathaniel and Emily walked through the hallway.
“You handled them well.”
Emily looked at him.
“Was that a compliment?”
“Yes.”
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“I thought you avoided giving them.”
Nathaniel almost smiled.
Almost.
Emily noticed.
“You were about to smile.”
“No.”
“You were.”
“No.”
For a moment…
Something normal appeared between them.
Not a contract.
Not an investigation.
Just two people talking.
Then Nathaniel's phone rang.
His expression changed immediately.
The atmosphere disappeared.
He answered.
“Yes.”
A pause.
Then:
“Send me everything.”
He ended the call.
Emily watched him.
“What happened?”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“Someone leaked information about your mother.”
Her expression changed.
“What information?”
Nathaniel handed her the phone.
A news article appeared.
BREAKING NEWS:
NEW EVIDENCE SUGGESTS ASTRA FOUNDATION DISASTER WAS CAUSED BY INTERNAL BETRAYAL.
Below the headline:
A blurred image.
A person inside Astra.
Emily zoomed in.
Her breathing stopped.
Because she recognized the person.
It was her mother.
But not alone.
Standing beside Evelyn Carter…
Was another person.
A man.
Nathaniel Reed.
That afternoon.
The entire internet turned against them.
Questions appeared everywhere.
Was Nathaniel Reed involved in Astra's destruction?
Did he marry Emily Carter to control her?
Was the marriage a cover-up?
Inside the Reed mansion.
Emily stood in front of Nathaniel.
The photograph was between them.
“You were there.”
Nathaniel did not deny it.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
A silence.
“Because I knew this would happen.”
“What?”
“You would look at the photo.”
“You would see me standing beside your mother.”
“And you would believe the worst.”
Emily stared at him.
“Should I not?”
Nathaniel looked at her.
For the first time…
His calm expression broke.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“No.”
“Because the person standing beside your mother…”
“Was the person trying to save her.”
Emily froze.
Before she could answer.
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire mansion became dark.
Security alarms started.
A red warning appeared.
INTRUSION DETECTED.
Nathaniel immediately moved.
He grabbed Emily's hand.
“Stay behind me.”
Emily pulled away.
“No.”
His eyes met hers.
“This is not the time—”
“I don't need protection.”
A pause.
Then she continued:
“I need the truth.”
The sound of broken glass came from outside.
Someone had entered the estate.
Someone who knew exactly where they were.
Nathaniel looked toward the darkness.
Then whispered:
“They found us.”
Emily's eyes became cold.
“Who?”
Nathaniel answered:
“The people who destroyed Astra.”
PART 3
The security system continued flashing.
Red lights filled the mansion.
Every employee had been moved to safety.
Only Emily and Nathaniel remained inside the main building.
The attacker was still somewhere nearby.
Emily stood beside the staircase.
Calm.
Focused.
Nathaniel noticed.
“You are not afraid.”
Emily looked at him.
“I was afraid ten years ago.”
A pause.
“Not anymore.”
Nathaniel studied her.
And for the first time, he understood.
Emily Carter's greatest weapon was not intelligence.
Not evidence.
Not revenge.
It was that fear no longer controlled her.
A sound came from the second floor.
Emily immediately moved.
Nathaniel grabbed her arm.
“Wait.”
She looked back.
“What?”
“You trust yourself too much.”
“And you trust nobody.”
A pause.
“Maybe that is why we work.”
Nathaniel released her.
A strange moment.
Almost like agreement.
They moved together.
Not as husband and wife.
Not yet.
But as partners.
They reached the study.
The door was open.
Inside…
Nothing seemed disturbed.
Until Emily noticed something.
The hidden archive.
Open.
Nathaniel's expression changed.
Someone had not come to hurt them.
They came for information.
Emily walked closer.
“What was here?”
Nathaniel did not answer.
That was enough.
“What was here?”
Finally:
“Astra files.”
“How many?”
“One.”
“What file?”
Nathaniel looked at her.
“The final research report.”
Emily froze.
“Project Genesis?”
Nathaniel's silence confirmed it.
Before she could speak…
A small device on the desk activated.
A recorded message appeared.
The screen showed a woman.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Evelyn Carter.
Emily stopped breathing.
Her mother.
Alive.
The recording began.
“Emily.”
Her eyes filled instantly.
Ten years.
Ten years without hearing that voice.
“I know you will find this eventually.”
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this…”
“It means Astra failed.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Nathaniel remained silent.
The recording continued.
“There are three people you need to know.”
“First.”
“The person who saved you.”
“Second.”
“The person who betrayed me.”
“Third…”
Evelyn paused.
Her expression became serious.
“The person who will try to finish what they started.”
The screen flickered.
Then the final words appeared.
“Emily.”
“Do not trust the person who loves you.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Emily slowly turned.
Her eyes moved toward Nathaniel.
Because one sentence changed everything.
Not:
Do not trust the person who saved you.
Not:
Do not trust the person beside you.
But:
Do not trust the person who loves you.
Nathaniel saw the doubt in her eyes.
But he did not defend himself.
He only said:
“Emily.”
“Yes?”
“If you believe I am that person…”
A pause.
“Leave now.”
She stared at him.
“You would let me go?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Nathaniel looked at the screen showing Evelyn's face.
“Because your mother trusted me with your life.”
“And I would rather lose you…”
“Than become the reason you lose yourself.”
Emily said nothing.
For the first time since returning to Westbridge…
She had no answer.
Because Nathaniel Reed was either:
The best liar she had ever met.
Or…
The only person telling her the truth.
Outside the mansion.
A figure watched from the darkness.
Holding a photograph.
The same photograph from ten years ago.
The figure whispered:
“Emily Carter is finally awake.”
A pause.
“And now…”
“Everyone who survived Astra will have to choose a side.”
The figure turned away.
Revealing only one thing.
A symbol on their hand.
A seven-pointed star.
Astra.
