Chapter 4 — The Wife Who Didn't Need His Protection
Part 1 The Man Who Wanted Answers
Alexander Sterling had never been a patient man.
When he wanted something, he found it.
When he had a question, he searched for the answer.
But Claire Bennett was different.
The more he investigated her, the more questions appeared.
Her past was incomplete.
Her records were unusual.
And the person she used to be seemed to have disappeared completely.
Alexander sat in his office late at night, looking at the old photograph again.
Ava Bennett.
The name felt familiar.
Not because he had met her.
But because he had heard stories.
Years ago, there had been a woman who helped people solve complicated problems when nobody else had answers.
She was never seen in public.
She never accepted attention.
She simply appeared, fixed the situation, and disappeared.
Some people called her a genius.
Others called her impossible to understand.
Alexander never believed in mysterious people.
Until Claire.
His assistant Daniel entered the office.
"We found another piece of information."
Alexander looked up immediately.
"What?"
"Before Ava Bennett disappeared, she was connected to someone inside the Sterling family."
A silence filled the room.
"Who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"We don't know yet."
Alexander stood up.
"Find out."
Daniel nodded.
Then he paused.
"Can I ask something?"
Alexander looked at him.
"Why are you investigating your wife like she's an enemy?"
The question stayed in the air.
Alexander didn't answer immediately.
Because he didn't know.
At first, it was simple.
Claire was a stranger.
The marriage was a contract.
He needed to know who he was dealing with.
But now...
Now he wanted to know because he was curious.
Because every time Claire smiled calmly in front of impossible situations, he wondered what she was thinking.
Because every time she walked away, he wanted to know what she was hiding.
That was dangerous.
Alexander Sterling did not like losing control.
Especially over his own thoughts.
Meanwhile, Claire knew Alexander was investigating her.
She noticed the small changes.
The questions he didn't ask.
The way he watched her.
The pauses before he spoke.
Alexander thought he was hiding his curiosity.
He wasn't.
But Claire didn't blame him.
If their positions were reversed, she would do the same.
Trust was never something given freely.
It was something earned.
Her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number:
"You can't hide forever, Ava."
Claire looked at the screen.
Then deleted the message.
Five years ago, she had escaped from that life.
But she knew something.
The past didn't disappear.
It waited.
Part 2 The Dinner Where Everyone Wanted Her To Fail
Three days later, Eleanor Sterling announced a family dinner.
Claire immediately understood.
This was not a normal dinner.
Since she married Alexander, the family had been watching her.
Waiting for a mistake.
And tonight, someone planned to create one.
When Claire arrived at the dining room, she noticed the atmosphere.
Too many people.
Too formal.
Too deliberate.
Victoria was there.
Of course.
She smiled when Claire entered.
"Claire, I'm glad you came."
Claire smiled politely.
"I was invited."
A few people looked away to hide their reactions.
Victoria's smile became slightly colder.
"I heard you have been helping Alexander recently."
Claire sat down.
"Helping?"
"Giving opinions."
Victoria tilted her head.
"I just find it surprising."
"Why?"
"Because Alexander has always surrounded himself with experienced people."
The meaning was obvious.
Claire didn't belong.
Eleanor looked at Alexander.
"Perhaps Claire is still adjusting."
Claire calmly picked up her glass.
"I am."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued:
"Adjusting to how quickly people judge others."
The room became quiet.
Alexander looked at her.
Again.
That calm confidence.
That ability to respond without losing control.
Victoria changed the topic.
"Actually, Claire."
She smiled.
"I wanted to ask you something."
"Go ahead."
"I heard you once worked with many important people."
A small pause.
"Is that true?"
Claire's fingers stopped for half a second.
Only half a second.
But Alexander noticed.
Victoria continued:
"Or maybe I heard wrong?"
There it was.
A trap.
She wanted Claire to explain.
To reveal something.
To become defensive.
But Claire simply smiled.
"People hear many things."
Victoria leaned forward.
"So it's not true?"
Claire looked at her.
"Did you ask because you wanted the truth?"
Victoria smiled.
"Of course."
"Then why did you already decide the answer?"
Silence.
The entire table became uncomfortable.
Because Claire had exposed the real question.
Victoria didn't want information.
She wanted control.
After dinner, something unexpected happened.
One of the family members suddenly accused Claire of leaking private family information.
The accusation came quickly.
Too quickly.
"Before Claire joined this family, nobody outside knew about our plans."
The man placed a document on the table.
"But now someone does."
Everyone looked at Claire.
For a moment, the room felt frozen.
This was the moment they had been waiting for.
The outsider finally made a mistake.
Alexander's expression became cold.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
He stood beside Claire.
"Do you have proof?"
The man hesitated.
"We have evidence."
"No."
Alexander looked at the document.
"You have an assumption."
His voice was sharp.
"You are accusing my wife without proof."
Claire looked at him.
She didn't expect that.
Because according to their agreement...
He didn't have to protect her.
Part 3 The Woman Who Protected Herself
After leaving the dining room, Alexander walked with Claire.
"I apologize."
Claire looked at him.
"For what?"
"My family."
She smiled.
"I can handle them."
"I know."
That answer surprised her.
Alexander stopped.
"I know you can."
Claire looked at him.
"Then why did you interfere?"
A moment of silence.
Alexander looked away.
"Because they were wrong."
Claire studied him.
That was not the answer she expected.
"You don't usually defend people."
"No."
"Then why me?"
Alexander didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
Because the truth was uncomfortable.
He had protected her before thinking.
That was not like him.
They continued walking.
Then Claire suddenly stopped.
"Wait."
Alexander looked at her.
"What?"
She looked toward the garden.
"There."
A small security camera.
Alexander frowned.
"What about it?"
"It moved."
He looked carefully.
The camera angle had changed.
Impossible.
Unless someone had touched the system.
Claire walked toward the control panel.
"Someone wanted the accusation tonight."
Alexander watched her.
"You noticed that?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Claire looked back.
"Because people who create problems usually leave signs."
She opened the system.
A few seconds later, she found something.
A hidden recording.
The person who had accessed the information wasn't Claire.
It was someone else.
Alexander looked at the screen.
The person was wearing a mask.
But before leaving...
They dropped something.
A small card.
Claire's expression changed.
Because she recognized it.
Alexander noticed.
"You know that symbol."
Claire didn't answer.
"Claire."
She looked at him.
For the first time, there was no calm smile.
Only seriousness.
"Yes."
"What is it?"
Claire looked at the symbol again.
A symbol from five years ago.
A symbol she thought she would never see again.
"It means someone from my past has found me."
Alexander became silent.
"Your past?"
Claire nodded.
Then she said something that changed everything.
"Alexander..."
"If they know I'm here..."
She looked at him.
"They know you married me."
That night, Alexander returned to his office.
He opened the investigation file again.
But this time, he wasn't searching for a stranger.
He was searching for someone who might be in danger.
Someone who had been running from something for five years.
Someone who had become impossible to ignore.
His wife.
Meanwhile, across the city, a man looked at a photo of Claire.
He smiled.
"So she finally came back."
He placed the photo down.
Beside it was another picture.
A younger Claire.
And underneath:
Ava Bennett — The woman who disappeared.
